This blended teaching program consists of two parts: online lessons and face-to-face follow-up activities and workshops.

Descriptions of Online Lessons

Effective Teaching Tips and Good Practices

 

This lesson reviews Koç University (KU) teaching regulations by VPAA and presents various strategies and techniques for effective teaching. Enhancing student engagement, blending lecturing with student-centered active learning activities, effective use of Blackboard tools (online quizzes, lecture videos, feedback, discussion forums), and integration of textbook digital resources to Blackboard is covered in this online lesson.
 

Learning-Centered Course Design and Delivery

 

This lesson aims to present the use of backward design method for (re)designing and delivering learning-centered courses. Participants will be able to demonstrate an understanding of defining learning outcomes, assessment methods and learning activities within the premises of learning-centeredness.

 

Learning Management System: Blackboard

 

Blackboard, one of the most popular learning management system (LMS) in the world, is used commonly by the instructors for the management and delivery of learning content and resources to students at Koç University. The aim of this workshop is to familiarize new faculty members with the use of Blackboard at KU.

Teaching Experiences at Koç University

The online lesson “Effective Teaching Tips and Good Practices” will be reviewed and discussed briefly. Recommendations and teaching tips from ten faculty members who received outstanding teaching awards at KU will also be reviewed in this workshop. Participants will have the chance to discuss many learning and teaching issues such as the first day, preparation to class, and dialogue with students, course organization, selection of examples and exercises, blending lecturing with in-class activities, assessment for learning, and so on.

Learning-Centered Course Design and Delivery in Practice

In this face-to-face workshop, participants will be able to use the knowledge and skills they gain in online training Learning-Centered Course Design and Delivery.  They will (re)design one of their courses by using backward design methodology in order to make it more learning-centered. They will also plan a 75-minute class that integrates learning activities that focus on active participation and engagement of students.

Learning Management System: Blackboard

At the end of this hands-on workshop, participants will be able to recognize the interface and navigation on Blackboard, and add menu items, content (documents, web links, videos, etc.) and assessment tools. Participants will also practice the use of some other features of Blackboard such as discussion forums, grade center, etc.

II. SUPPORT SERVICES

Class Observation

 

Improving teaching through class observation is a widely used pedagogical tool for improving day-to-day teaching. You can invite KOLT staff to observe your class in order to get feedback about your strengths and areas of improvement in teaching. You can request a detailed report and extended consultation session to discuss your observation and create an action plan for improvement.

Collecting Early and Frequent Feedback from Students

 

KOLT can visit your classroom in the middle of the semester or administer online course evaluation surveys at some intervals during the semester to gather feedback from your students anonymously. You receive a full report that summarizes students’ feedback. The report may help you to identify practices that you want to keep and improve in your course.

Individualized consultation can be preferred to discuss and solve any specific concerns about teaching, syllabus design, (re)design a course, bringing interactivity and engagement to class, or integration of educational technologies to boost student learning.
